The construction of the East -West Coastal Highway by the Federal Government has continued to generate reactions with some criticizing while others applaud the project.

Former Senator representing Bayelsa East, Ben Murray-Bruce sees the highway as a lifeline for business, a catalyst for economic development, and a symbol of hope for a better future.

He asked one of the major critics of the project, the Labour Party’s (LP) Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, and others not to use the road once it is completed.

Obi has been one of the most outspoken critics of the 700-kilometer road that will connect Lagos, Ogun, Ondo Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, and Calabar states. He described it as a misplaced priority, noting that the existing highways require immediate maintenance and significantly improved security.

However, in a video posted on his X handle, Bruce expressed surprise that some Nigerians would oppose this project, and emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to this project is a beacon of hope for the nation

The senator stated, “A new era in Nigerian transport history has begun.” A 700” km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway with feeder roads joining it from different parts of the country is being built by the present administration.

“It is a proof of the transformative power of visionary leadership of President Bola Tinubu who has put the present minister of works, David Umahi- a man of unwavering dedication at the helm of affairs.

“With its cutting-edge technology and innovative design, this highway will slash travel times, reduce transportation costs and increase access to markets and resources.

“It will be a game changer for entrepreneurs, investors, travellers and unlock new opportunities and boost economic growth.

“As we embark on this journey, we are not just building a highway, President Tinubu is crafting a legacy of prosperity and growth.

“The Lagos-Calabar highway will be a lifeline for business, a catalyst for economic development and a symbol of hope for a brighter future.

“This is why it is surprising that some disgruntled people are opposing this project. I will suggest that such enemies of progress should not ply the road when it is completed and stick to the old long and treacherous routes.
