CBN: Cardoso Did Not Beg Tinubu To Retain His Job

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor Yemi Cardoso has not been asked to resign, the Presidency has said.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration made the clarification following reports that the president asked the CBN Governor to tender his resignation for not performing since he was appointed into the office.

For instance, President Tinubu , the report said is unhappy that the CBN under Cardoso has not been able to stabilise naira, even though he had promised Tinubu to do so before his appointment.

The president, the report claimed is also not happy that the economy has taken a nosedive while the CBN has not done enough to change the tide.

Reacting to the suggestion, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy described the report as “lies”, the president, he said on his X handle did not asked the CBN boss to resign.

According to him, “It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign”

The report had claimed that Cardoso went with some Yoruba leaders, including Chief Bisi Akande, a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC to Aso Rock, Presidential Villa to beg the president not to sack him.

President Tinubu was said to have issued Cardoso the advise to resign from his position before he embarked on his trip to China two weeks ago.

Cardoso was nominated to the position on September 15, 2023 by President Tinubu.
