Catholic Priest Held Over Fatal Shooting Of Teenager Inside Church

The Imo State Police Command has confirmed that a Catholic Priest,  Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya is being held in connection with the fatal shooting of a teenager during cross over Mass on Tuesday night, December 31, 2024 .

The Priest, allegedly, shot and killed the teenager at St Columbus Catholic Church Amaimo in Ikeduru Local Council of the State in apparent anger.

The teenager was said to have set off some fireworks inside the Church, a development which angered the officiating priest.

Rev Fr Enyinnaya, who considered the fireworks a huge distraction and disruption of the Church service, allegedly, angrily responded by drawing out a gun and ,shooting the young man.

According to some eye witness accounts, the Catholic Clergy acted in a fleet of exasperation.

While the teenager died instantly, another person close to the victim was  seriously injured.

Not a few faithful were shocked by the incident, and are calling for a full scale inquest to unravel the circumstances surrounding the development.

The State Police Command spokesperson, Henry Okoye, informed that the body of the victim has been recovered and deposited at  the Atta, Ikeduru mortuary.

This is even as the Command has assured of a comprehensive probe to uncover the facts behind the unfortunate incident.

“The priest has been arrested and the body of the boy has been recovered and deposited at the Atta Ikeduru mortuary.

“The police investigation is expected to shed more light on the events leading up to the incident” the Police stated .

Okoye, however, promised that the police will be up- dating the public on further developments regarding the matter.
