Former President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed the victory at the Supreme Court of Major General Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashir as the Emir of Gwandu. He defeated the deposed Emir, Major Haruna Jokolo after a 20-year legal battle.
Jokolo was deposed as the Emir of Gwandu by the Kebbi State Government for, allegedly, his very strong stand on issues.
And, in the past 20 years, Jokolo has been battling to regain the revered stool from which he was deposed.
Jokolo went to Court to regain his seat.But 20 years after, he finally lost at the Supreme Court.
Hailing the victory of his friend and and former course mate, Buhari urged Emir Bashir to intensify his efforts in building on the successes and achievements he had attained. Buhari applauded him for working for the betterment of his people, even in the face of the challenging distraction from tye prolonged litigation.
The statement signed by his Spokesperson, Garba Shehu, reads in full:
“Former President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated his friend and course mate in the Military, Major General Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashir CFR, mni, who clinched a stunning victory at the Supreme Court following a 20-year battle for the throne against a deposed Emir, Major Haruna Jokolo, rtd.
“In a telephone call from London where the former President is at the moment, President Buhari expressed his heartiest congratulations to the Emir urging him to do more to build on the successes and achievements he attained even as he faced a challenging distraction from the prolonged litigation.
“You have always worked for the betterment of your people and the nation even under those circumstances. I hope you will continue to promote peace, happiness, and prosperity of the people in Gwandu Emirate and beyond.
“I thank Allah for this victory and pray for your long life and good health.”
