President Donald Trump of America has announced that he has expanded the list of countries that were placed on travel ban early in his administration. The ban, this time, is to include Nigeria which, according to him, has fallen short of US security standards. This comes at a time when Boko Haram terrorists beheaded a sectional Leader of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN. President Buhari has, however, condemned the killing.
Controversy had trailed the list of countries banned-or at least restricted-from entering the north American country since the inauguration of President trump, with many seeing it as uncalled for . Trump did not elaborate on the countries to be added.
But the Wall Street Journal quoted White house sources as giving the list of countries to include Belarus, Myanmar, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania. According to the Journal, the official had stressed that the list may change. The 2017 ban included Iran, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Chad, Venezuela and North Korea. Iraq and Sudan which were banned under previous arrangements, are now no longer under ban.
The American Supreme Court upheld the ban in 2018 after controversies and challenges landed it at the American Apex Court. The ruling was tight-5 against 4 judges in a for and against ruling.
Nigeria has been passing through some diplomatic turbulence with the US over Human Rights Violation of the Buhari regime. A new Ambassador to Nigeria has recently resumed. It is to be noted that hours after she visited the President to submit his credentials, Presidency released Sambo Dasuki, a former National Security Adviser, and Omoyele Sowore, who has been held in captivity in violation of Court orders.
The Trump Administration is said to perceive Nigeria as a country where Christians are persecuted.
Trump action coincided with his drive to lower the number of refugees coming into America, and this has, according to data, drastically reduced the number of Muslim immigrants into the United States.
