Reactions has trailed the dethronement of The Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi II, who has been dethroned by the Kano State governor, Umar Ganduje. This, according to the secretary of the government, is with Immediate effect, and that a new Emir will be announced in due course.
The dethronement followed on the heels of commotion in the state house of Assembly, when two petitions against the Emir was being debated. The debate had degenerated along party lines as pandemonium ensued, with the Opposition Peoples democratic party in support of Sanusi. it ended up in a free for all fight.
Recall that a Federal High Court sitting in Kano had last month stood down are report of the commission that investigated and indicted the Sanusi over an allegation of N3.4 billion fraud perpetrated within the Emirate Council. Recently, another Federal High Court in Kano placed a restraining order on Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, banning them from investigating the Sanusi over alleged land fraud to the tune of N2. 2bn.
“Right now, it appears the north is not prepared for a reformist Emir”, tweeted Kayode Ogundemisi.
Another twitter user, engineer SanB, tweeted: “very bad move by ganduje!!… dethroning sanusi is a very bad move even 4RM a political point of view!!. sanusi can run 4 any office in kano and would defeat ganduje himself or his interests over there.. sanusi is too popular in kano to be silenced”.
Dele Momodu, Publisher of Ovation wrote: ” I hope now that GOVERNOR GANDUJE and his co-conspirators have taken their pound of flesh by dethroning the Emir of Kano, their eyes will clear and see later that their own power too is transient! No matter the sins of Emir Sanusi, he is one of the finest citizens of Nigeria.”
