Filling in the vacuum created by the suspension of funding of the World Health Organisation, the Chinese government has announced that they will fund the World Bank with an additional $30 million, having earlier donated $20 million last March. President Trump had announced that America is no more going to honor their obligations to the World Health Organization, WHO, citing their dubious role in handling the Covi-19 epidermic. WHO hesitated before announcing that they have categorized the disease as Epidermic, and, worse still, dithered over labeling the disease a pandemic. He accused WHO of being biased in favor of China, and of aiding China in the coverup of the exact seriousness of the disease.
“I am directing my administration to halt funding while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” Trump was reported to have said.
America has been the largest single funder of the World body. Last year, they gave the Organisation $400 million. this is about 15% of the total funding for the organization which is seeking $1 billion to tackle COVID-19. This funding will now be reviewed, and after 90 days, a final decision will be reached.
The Global body hopes that Trump will rescind his decision.
The WHO had launched an appeal to the global community in March for $675m for the war against Coronavirus pandemic and is said to be planning a fresh appeal for at least $1bn.
