This must be a hope dampener for Adams Oshiomhole, the suspended National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC. It must also be a depressing time for one of his main backers, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and about 17 members of the National Working Committee.
But Minister for Transport, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, whose man, Chief Victor Giadom has been embattled, may have a last laugh.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who is, also, the National Leader of the party, seems to have dumped Oshiomhole.
In the midst of the confusion over who really is the Acting Chairman of the APC, given court rulings and counter court rulings, the President who had kept quiet while his party boiled, has finally endorsed Chief Victor Giadom.
Oshiomhole and his camp had been fiercely against Giadom. They backed the still hospitalised Senator Abiola Ajimobi, and in his absence, appointed Gilliard Eta, National Vice Chairman, South-south, to act on his behalf.
Giadom had been backed by a Court ruling which confirmed him for the position, but Oshiomhole had dismissed him, almost, as senseless for claiming to be the Acting Chairman. They also got the Rivers State chapter of the APC, to suspend him, and replace him as the Acting Deputy National Secretary. In his place, a Senator Magnus Abe man, Nr Boms was sworn in, this over- heating the APC Crisis in Rivers State. Amaechi, now in deep disagreement with Abe, kept mum.
But Giadom ignored the Oshimhole group, and summoned a National Executive Council meeting.
Most of the APC NWC members dismissed the meeting as illegal.
But Wednesday afternoon, Mr President suddenly woke up, and stamped his feet of authority, backing Giadom.
In a press statement on his behalf, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Carbs Shehu, said that:
“The President has received very convincing advice on the position of the law as far as the situation in the party is concerned and has determined that the law is on the side of Victor Giadom as Acting National Chairman.
“Because he will always act in accordance with the law, the President will be attending the Virtual meeting Giadom called for tomorrow afternoon.
“We urge the media to stop promoting manufactured controversies and to not give any further room for mischievous interpretations of the law on this matter.
“In addition to the President, the Giadom meeting will, hopefully, be attended by our Governors and the leaders of the National Assembly.”
The Social Media was agog, on Wednesday, that Mr President snubbed the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Kayode Fayemi, and Giadom, when they attempted to see him in the Villa. The Pesident’s endorsement seem to have put a lie to that story.
Giadom had, a couple of days ago, cancelled the screening of Governorship Aspirants which screened out Obaseki, and paved the way for Oshiomhole’s candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Italy, to pick the ticket.
It remains to be seen how Giadom’s Presidential endorsement will affect Giadom. But automatically, his sack from the NWC will be put aside for now.
Earlier Wednesday morning, Giadom had said he had the President’s support to summon the NEC meeting. Not many people believed him.
Now, it is clear where his powers came from.
