After speculation that lasted for more than a year, Gbenga Daniel has finally dumped his party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP. The two time governor of Ogun state has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The former governor who served as the Director General of the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation in the 2019 presidential election, first gave an indication that his body and soul was no longer with the PDP which gave him the opportunity to be governor for eight years, immediately after former Vice President Abubakar lost the election to Muhamadu Buhari in 2019.
The PDP somehow prevailed on him and he stayed back.
Daniel has now stated that he’s no longer comfortable remaining in the PDP, that he wants to take advantage of the ongoing APC membership revalidation process to turn around his political career.
According to information gathered by the magazine, the former governor was prevailed upon by the Governor Dapo Abiodun to join him in the APC. Daniel was among politicians in the state that worked for the victory of the incumbent.
Besides, it was also learnt that some APC stalwarts from the north, particularly governors have been speaking with the former governor to join the APC.
Daniel has now begged whoever may have been offended on his decision to defect to APC to “pardon my short notice in informing you of my route to the APC which as you might have suspected started with my supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun during the last election.I have since experienced an avalanche of encouragement to come on board.
“However in the last 48 hours things took a dizzying speed with the decision of the APC National Chairman request to visit me at Asoludero on Wednesday with about three Governors.
“While planning for the visit Governor Abiodun also decided to visit me later today with another set of Governors later today.
“It therefore means that I have finally been ‘captured’ “I thought I should quickly brief the house before the news go viral, ‘’ the former governor said in a statement on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the magazine learnt that the APC Care Committee led by Governor Buni of Yobe state is poised to poach more politicians from the PDP ahead the 2023 general election.
