He kept it to his chest. Gave no inkling. And, in a move which surprised all book makers, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, May 12, appointed Ambassador Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, CFR, as his Chief of Staff.
Gambari replaces Buhari’s ally and confidante, Malam Abba Kyari, who died on April 12, a victim of Coronavirus.
Before Gambari’s suprise appointment, a few names had been bandied around, including Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, who not a few people put their bet on.
If Buhari wanted somebody with a broad and liberal view of the world, he got that in Gambari.
Gambari is a scholar and diplomat.
A native of Ilorin, Kwara State, he was born on 24th November, 1944, and was Nigeria’s Minister for External Affairs between 1984 and 1985.
An old boy of Kings College, Lagos, Gambari also attended, among other schools, Johns Hopkins University, and the Columbia University. He is an author of many books.
