The Nigerian Army has warned residents of Borno State to remain vigilant, saying Boko Haram terrorists may be planning more suicide bombings in the state capital, Maiduguri.
The warning was issued on Tuesday by the spokesman of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), Lt. Col. Sani Uba, who said security agencies are also on alert to ensure that such moves were thwarted.
Col. Uba spokes barely two days after the multiple explosions, believed to have been executed by the terrorists, went off in the state capital on Tuesday.
The explosion, which left in its wake 20 residents dead, and dozens critically wounded have been condemned across the country. It has also heightened anxiety in the North east state which has not experienced such devastating incident in years from the Islamic insurgents.
According to the Army spokesman, the terrorists detonated the bombs in other to cause fear in the minds of the people of the state, adding that the terrorists may be planning more bombings to achieve their evil aim.
He stressed that security agencies are on top of the situation, and working together to ensure that the peace in the state is maintained.
“To prevent a recurrence, security forces have intensified surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED measures across the city,” Uba said in the statement.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned the suicide attacks, saying the country will overcome its current security challenges, particularly insurgency.
As the Commander-in chief, Tinubu had also directed all Security Chiefs in the country to relocate to the state, to ensure that calm is returned.
“I mourn those who lost their lives, sympathise with the injured and stand in solidarity with the people of Borno during this challenging time,” the president said.
Describing the incident as ‘profoundly disturbing’ the president said the terrorists are desperate because they are under serious pressures from security agencies, and that, what happened on Monday was a ploy by the insurgents to prove a point.
Tinubu, however, stated that there will not be a hiding place for the terrorists because they will be hunted down.
“We will locate them, confront them, and completely defeat them.”
“We will continue to intensify our efforts against all criminal elements, wherever they may be,” Tinubu promised.
