Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, June 3, 2025, said the recently brokered peace deal between him and his political godson, suspended Governor Similanayi Fubara, is not being well received by those he described as crisis merchants.
This is as he insisted on not revealing the cost of the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu to end the political crisis that engulfed the State since late 2023 .
At a media interactive session in Abuja, Wike informed that while the disagreement lasted, many transactional actors turned the situation in to an “oil well” from where they drew considerable financial and other benefits.
According to him, such individuals are now ruing their losses with the new peace initiatives in place. He alleged that those hitherto profiting from the impasse are now trying to find a way of either truncating the new found peace or create another round of crisis.
Wike pointedly, accused the enemies of peace in the State of weaving all kinds of tales about the terms and conditions of the peace agreement between him and Governor Fubara .
The Source reports that speculations have been rife about the unfavourable nature of the peace agreement to the suspended Governor, particularly the insinuation that part of the deal was for him not to seek a second term in office.
Instructively, while addressing some of his supporters a few days after the peace initiative, Governor Fubara had admitted the difficult nature of the peace agreement.
He, however, maintained that no sacrifices will be too much in the efforts to return peace to the State.
Despite the plethora of conjectures being spewed by some people about the peace agreement. Wike, however, said he will not be stampeded into making public details of the peace initiative.
” I don’t think I owe any explanation to anybody concerning the terms and conditions of the peace agreement among all the parties in the Rivers State crisis.
“The most important thing is that peace has returned to the State. I know that some people who were benefitting from the disagreement are not happy.
“After igniting the crisis, they turn Rivers state into an oil well ,.So ,most of those who instigated the problem are looking for ways to sabotage any peace efforts so that they will continue to exploit the State”, Wike noted.
