Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says there’s nothing to be celebrated over the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as governor of Rivers state by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to him, it was wrong for the president to have suspended the governor from office, saying the decision by the president to now lift his suspension has nothing to cheer about.
Abubakar made the remark on X few hours after President Tinubu suspended the Emergency Rule he imposed on the state, six months ago, on march 18, 2025, to avert what the president described as an impending political violence in the oil bearing state.
The magazine reported that the clash between the governor and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the FCT, has put the state on the edge of political violence, which Tinubu said he wanted to avert by imposing a State of Emergency.
Apart from suspending the governor, all democratic institution, including the state house of Assembly was also suspended.
The six months Emergency Rule ended on Wednesday, and President Tinubu said there was no need to extend it, saying all the parties involved have now determined to wok together for peace to reign in the oil state.
Reacting to the reinstatement of Governor Fubara and other democratic system in the state, Abubakar said the imposition, in the first instance, was an anomaly and unconstitutional.
He stressed that the Emergency rule was the height of President Tinubu’s dictatorship he has imposed on Nigerians, insisting that Tinubu has no power to remove a “democratically’ elected government of Fubara.
.
He said, “Lifting the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara is nothing to cheer about.
“The suspension of the Rivers State Governor and the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was done six months ago and is still illegal today.
“President Tinubu had no power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers. The Rivers shenanigans only signpost the dictatorship of the Tinubu administration.”
Few days ago, the Sole Administrator appointed by the president, Vice Admira lIbok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff disclosed during his valedictory service, in Port Harcourt , the state capital that peace has now been restored to the restive state.
