Gbenga Daniel, a serving Senator, and two-term Governor of Ogun State, has been suspended by the Ogun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The State Working Committee of the Party, according to its Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, endorsed the indefinite suspension of the Senator, as earlier recommended and done by his Ward, because he refused to appear before a Disciplinary Committee investigating him for alleged anti-party activities.
The report of the Disciplinary Committee set up by his Ward 4, Sagamu, indicted him. Since he was absent, the Ward said it relied on alleged documentary evidence and witnesses to his anti-party activities.
Suspended along with Daniel is Honourable Kunle Folarin of Ward 6, Sagamu. Same allegation of anti-party activities was leveled against him, and he too ignored the Disciplinary Committee set up to investigate him.
Endorsing the recommendation of the Committe for the indefinite suspension placed on both men, the SWC said it did so to preserve discipline in the party as well as its integrity.
However, not a few people insist that Daniel’s suspension is as a result of his very untidy relationship with the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun. The two men have been entangled in a political squabble which upped a few days ago when the State Government gave an order for the demolition of Daniel’s properties – his residence and hotel. He was forced to quickly secure a Court order which has temporarily halted the demolition order.
Opinion, however, is strong that the suspension of Daniel and Folarin is likely to be quashed by the APC National Headquarters.
Daniel was a two-term Governor of the State under the PDP. In 2019, he was the Director General of the Presidential Campaign of PDP’s Candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
On Atiku’s loss to the now late President Muhammadu Buhari, Daniel shocked both the PDP and Atiku by defecting to the APC.
