The ruling All progressives Congress, APC, has dismissed the African Democratic Congress, ADC as a threat saying it’s not frightened by whatever the latter is doing, The Punch reports.
APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, made the remark following the caucus meeting held by the ADC in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Thursday.
The meeting, attended by key opposition leaders in the country, such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, former governors Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, David Mark, ADC National Chairman, among others, the party said was convened to determine its future ahead the 2027 general elections.
The magazine had earlier reported that key opposition leaders in the country has adopted ADC as their platform to contest the 2027 election against the ruling APC.
Thus following the caucus meeting held yesterday, not a few Nigerians insist that the ADC appears to be consolidating its position less that two years into the election.
Reacting, Ibrahim said the APC is not moved by the development, saying politicians are at liberty to join any party they wish, adding that his party has been defectors from other parties who have strengthen its ranks.
He stressed that the APC has shown that it’s a party to beat judging from its recent victory during the off- season National Assembly election. The APC cleared majority of the seats during the bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC across the country.
He said, “This is nothing to frighten or put the APC in any state of embarrassment. As a matter of fact, the political atmosphere has given people room to realign. Don’t forget, the APC has been receiving an influx of people who are leaving their parties and joining the APC. So, people are at liberty to change sides and change signs as they wish.
“But I assure you, the APC will only grow in strength. If some leave, others will join, just as others are already joining.
“So, we are not bothered. We’re not bothered. We’re just at our strength. In the last elections, the recently concluded by-elections, it is clear that the ADC does not have the strength to rattle the APC. So, this is nothing to give the APC sleepless nights. You will soon see more people joining from other political parties, including from the ADC.”
