A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon Seyi Olorunsola, has called for unity within the party to make it stronger and prepare for future elections.
In an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, Olorunsola cautioned that “some recent overtures towards opposition party figures, while ostensibly aimed at broadening the party’s base, might have unintended consequences.”
He added that “The quest to weaken the opposition should not come at the cost of alienating your core supporters – those who have stood with you through thick and thin.
“On the other hand, it is crucially important to lead a nation with a vibrant opposition, otherwise we might have the tendency to pander towards a one-party state. The plurality of Nigeria and its diversity requires that multi-party democracy be allowed to thrive.
“Attempting to bring opposition politicians into the APC might be seen as a noble idea, but there is a delicate balance to maintain.
“The risk of breeding discontent within the party and diminishing the enthusiasm of your ardent supporters must be carefully considered.
“As the 2027 political permutations loom, it is imperative to focus on policy and good governance rather than political realignments.
“Recent policy decisions, such as the fuel subsidy removal and currency convergence, have had adverse effects on the purchasing power and economic fortunes of Nigerians.
“This critical juncture demands a steadfast commitment to governance, ensuring that the welfare of the people remains a top priority.
“Let us focus on good governance, policy implementation, and securing the welfare of Nigerians. As we navigate the intricate political landscape, unity within the APC should be prioritized to ensure a formidable and unassailable party as we approach the challenges of the 2027 elections.”
