Anambra Market Building Collapse: Anxiety, As Many Are Feared Trapped

The Anambra Police Command on Thursday, July 4, said two persons so far have been rescued from the rubbles of a collapsed building at the Eke Oyibo Market Amawbia in Awka South Local Council of the State.

The two-storey building still under construction was said to have collapsed at about 12 .30 pm on Tuesday.

Although no official confirmation of casualties at the time of reporting, many are, however believed to be trapped

Though still under construction, witnesses said the ground floor of the collapsed building was housing a sizable number of traders as at the time the incident occurred.

Most of the traders are strongly believed to have been trapped.

No official confirmation has been offered as the cause (s) of the building’s collapse. However, some eye witness accounts have blamed the incident on a possible use of substandard materials and poor supervision.

In a statement ,the Anambra Police Command Spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, SP, said the rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention.

Rescue efforts, he said, are underway, while the Command’s top hierarchy has visited the scene for an on the spot assessment, as well as to boost rescue operations
