The Anambra State Government on Monday October 21, 2024, vowed to explore all available and lawful means to track down the perpetrators of Sunday’s human carnage in the Nibo and Nodu Okpuno Communities of the State.
To this end, it has promised a very handsome reward for information that could assist in hunting down the mass killers
The Source reports that alleged cult-related clashes had left over eleven persons dead in the two communities on Sunday during the celebration of a traditional festival known as Onwa Asaa ( New Yam Festival)
Sporadic exchange of gunfire by rival gangs was said to have blighted an otherwise cherished traditional event ,forcing celebrants to scamper for safety.
Anambra State Police Command said it has beefed up security in and around the affected communities.
Speaking on Sunday, Command’s Spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, SP ,noted that police authorities had been alerted to the unfortunate development, promising that efforts are underway to fish out the masterminds.
In a statement on Monday, Dr Law Mefor, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, while acknowledging the ugly incident, informed that the State Government has activated measures aimed at apprehending those responsible for the dastardly act.
“The Anambra State Government is aware of the deaths that resulted from alleged cult-related actions in Nibo, Awka South LG, on Sunday October 20,2024”, Mefor stated.
He described the incident as sad, unfortunate and a disturbing trend in the violent crimes linked to cult and other criminal groups in the State.
While extending condolences to the families of the dead and others affected by the unfortunate development, he assured of the State Government’s commitment towards eradicating criminal activities in Anambra.
The State Commissioner for Information also affirmed Government’s readiness to carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident with a view to serving justice to those responsible.
Like the Police, Dr Mefor called on the public to come forward with relevant information that can aid the arrest of the perpetrators, as well as investigations.
He noted that the State Government will shortly roll out some hot lines through which members of the public can volunteer credible intelligence that can assist security agencies.
Apart from rewarding rewarding informants, the State Government will also treat with utmost confidentiality any intelligence provided .
He however urged the people, to go about their normal activities as security agencies are all out to guarantee peace and order.
