Anambra Assembly Poll: Peter Obi Urges Support For Slain Hon.Azuka’s Widow

The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party,  LP , Peter Obi has thrown his weight behind the quest by the wife of slain Anambra law maker Mrs Justina Azuka to replace her late husband.

Obi, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, called on all well-meaning people, both within and outside the Onitsha North I State Constituency, to rally behind her ambition during the forthcoming State Assembly by-election in the State.

The Source reports that Hon. Justice Azuka was on the eve of 2024 Christmas abducted by gunmen while on his way home .

The decomposing remains  of the Legislator who represented Onitsha North I State Constituency in the Anambra’ State House of Assembly on the platform of LP, was later recovered close to the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha after some weeks.

His wife, however, is in  the race to succeed her late husband on the platform of the emerging opposition Coalition, African Democratic Congress ADC ,with the LP followers believed to be fully in support of her ambition.

Writing on his official X site , Obi, who was recently spotted campaigning for the late Lawmaker’s wife for the August 16, by-election, wearing branded ADC cap, expressed his support and full understanding of the ambition of Mrs Azuka.

”Today, I visited Mrs Justina Azuka, who recently suffered the tragic and gruesome loss of her husband, Hon Justice Azuka, in the hands of kidnappers.

“In the face of this unimaginable pain , Mrs Azuka has chosen the path of service , stepping forward to contest the Onitsha North I state Constituency seat in the House of Assembly, to serve the remaining 13 months of her late husband’s tenure.

“She is a young mother of three–the eldest just 7 years old and the others 5 and 3.

“I have always maintained that leadership without compassion is meaningless. True leadership must balance competence with humanity .

“Mrs Azuka is an HND graduate in Public Administration -qualified , competent ,a woman of strength , resilience and commitment to service.

“I call on all well-meaning citizens, at home and beyond ,to rally behind her candidacy.  Supporting her is not only an investment in competent representation, but also a collective act of solidarity that will help ease the pain ,and heavy burden of her loss .

“She has my full support, and I urge us all to stand together to ensure that this capable and committed daughter of ours is elected on Saturday August 16,2025.

“In doing so, we send a clear message that in the new Nigeria ,we will be compassionate ; we will care for one another in times of difficulty, and we will uphold justice alongside competent leadership”, Obi stated .

Although officially flying the flag of ADC ,Mrs Justina is said to be the adopted candidate of the LP in next Saturday ‘s Bye-election.

Followers of the two political parties are said to have resolved to work together to ensure that she emerges victorious.

Not a few people have slammed Governor Charles Soludo for letting his Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, to field a candidate against the widow of the late Honourable Azuka who was abducted and murdered under his watch.
