Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has disclosed that Governors from the South West are discussing with the Federal Government to allow the zonal security outfit, Amotekun to carry arms.

Before his death, former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, after he succeeded in birthing the security outfit, engaged the Federal Government on the need to equip its personnel with arms.

Speaking on Sunday evening on the maiden edition of ‘The Governor Speaks,’ a radio programme in Ado Ekiti, Oyebanji stated that personnel of the security outfit are more familiar with their areas of operation.

He said “As far as security is concerned, Ekiti State stands as one of the most peaceful in the country. While challenges persist in some interior areas, our working template has proven successful.

“The Amotekun corps, focused on intelligence gathering, has shown effectiveness. The Southwest Governors are in discussions with the Federal Government to grant the Amotekun corps the license to carry weapons, recognizing their  understanding of the local environment.”

On the moribund airport project, which remained uncompleted and had already been commissioned by former Governor Kayode Fayemi, Oyebanji assured that the project would soon see the light of the day.

“The Ekiti cargo airport is poised to commence operations by July this year, pending necessary approvals and considerations.

“Once operational, it will contribute significantly to economic activities. I must appreciate Aare Afe Babalola even though Baba wouldn’t want me to  mention this publicly but I would ungrateful if I failed to show appreciation for his support for the airport project.”

Oyebanji, who had served as Chief of Staff, commissioner and secretary to government pointed out that leveraging a comprehensive grasp of government operations has greatly streamlined his responsibilities as Governor.

“With almost 12 years of working experience with past governors, I’ve acquired priceless experiences, leaving no room for underperformance.

“I am surrounded by Ekiti giants who mean well for the State . The likes of Baba Afe Babalola , Chief Wole Olanipekun , Sen. Babafemi Ojudu , Chief Femi Falana , all the former governors, all our National Assembly members and a host of others who always look out for opportunities for Ekiti State .”
