Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro, has finally released the list of players to prosecute the 2024 African Cup of Nations Qualifiers against The Falcons and True Parrot Team of São Tomé and Principe in a dead rubber last Group Match at the Godswill Obot Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on September 10, 2023.
Surprisingly, Super Eagles Captain, Ahmed Musa was dropped from the team, alongside Alex Iwobi who just made a switch from Everton Football Club to Fulham Football Club in the England Premier League due to injury.
Goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho who was conspicuously dropped from the match against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone has been recalled back into the team.
Red hot Gent Football Club of Belgium forward, Emmanuel Gift Orban and Bayer Leverkusen Football Club of Germany Striker, Victor Okoh Boniface received their Call-Ups into the national team.
Another Gent Football Club player, Jordan Torunarigha also received a Call Up into the National side after impressing in the Belgian League.
The list of invited players includes; Goalkeepers: Francis Uzoho (Omonia Nicosia, Cyprus), Olorunleke Ojo (Enyimba, Nigeria), Adebayo Adeleye (Hapoel Tel Aviv, Israel).
Defenders: Olaoluwa Aina (Nottingham Forest, England), Tyronne Ebuehi (Empoli, Italy), Jordan Torunarigha (Gent, Belgium), William Troost-Ekong (PAOK Salonica, Greece), Semi Ajayi (West Bromwich Albion, England), Calvin Bassey (Fulham, England), Jamilu Collins (Cardiff City, England), Bruno Onyemaechi (Boavista, Portugal).
Midfielders: Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City, England), Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge, Belgium), Joe Ayodele-Aribo (Southampton, England) and Frank Onyeka (Brentford, England).
Forwards: Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City, England), Samuel Chukwueze (AC Milan, Italy), Moses Simon (Nantes, France), Ademola Lookman (Atalanta, Italy), Victor Osimhen (Napoli, Italy), Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest, England), Gift Orban (Gent, Belgium) and Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany).
Nigeria has already its place in the AFCON 2024 tournament scheduled to take place in Côte d’ Ivoire in January 2024 having recorded Four Wins from Five games, defeating Sierra Leone 2-1 and 3-2 in Nigeria and in Liberia, recording victories against São Tomé and Principe 10-0 and a 1-0 win against Guinea Bissau.
The Super Eagles lost to Guinea Bissau at home on Matchday Three, which remains their only loss so far in the qualifying series.
Coach Peseiro has said that the dead rubber match against São Tomé and Principe will give him the opportunity to try the newly invited players and bring about competitiveness in the national team.
