Following Senator Ademola Adeleke’s virtual victory in the September 22 inconclusive Osun gubernatorial election, supporters of Lagos State governor, Akinwumi Ambode, are putting pressure on him to call the bluff of his godfather and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC who has refused to endorse his second term bid. The Source learnt that the governor’s supporters and a number Lagos of APC chieftains loyal to him have asked him to chart an independent political course by embracing another political platform to realize his second term ambition, should Tinubu insist on not supporting him.
They told him that what happened in Osun where Adeleke, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in the election, outshined his APC counterpart, Gboyega Oyetola who is also Tinubu’s cousin, was a clear indication that the APC National Leader’s hold on South west was fast waning. Besides that, Ambode’s supporters are optimistic that he will have a smooth sail back to office even without Tinubu’s support as Lagos is cosmopolitan state where voters from varying ethno-religious background cannot be dictated to by any godfather.
It is not clear what will eventually be Ambode’s response to his supporters’ demand but credible sources told this Magazine that the governor has since resolved to proceed with his second term ambition with or without endorsement of critical stakeholders in Lagos APC, including Tinubu.
