Abducted Corps Members: Imo Police Gives Update

The Imo State Police Command has said that 10 out of the 20 Youth Corp Members abducted in the Umunoha area of the State have been rescued. 

 

This update came on the heels of the Command’s confirmation that indeed, a good number of the Corpers and some other passengers were abducted. The Corpers, mainly grafuates of the University of Ibadan and Ladoke Akintola University, were on their way to report to Camp when the two buses they were travelling in were intercepted by their abductors. 

 

The State Police Command’s Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, a DSP,  in a statement issued tin Owerri disclosed

that two buses conveying the corps members and other passengers from Ibadan to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and Bende in Abia State, respectively, were  attacked by armed men.

According to him,the quick response of the Police and other security agencies led to the recovery of the two buses and the rescue of 10 victims at the scene.

 

Okoye: “Two buses, conveying NYSC corps members and other passengers from Ibadan to Uyo, and Bende in Abia, respectively, were attacked by suspected armed men.

 

“Following a swift response by the Police and other security agencies, both buses have been recovered and 10 victims were rescued at the scene.”

 

The rescued victims, he added, were safe and receiving necessary attention. He, also, disclosed that the command was still working to establish the exact number of people abducted during the attack.

He said: “The exact number of persons abducted is being verified and will be made public once confirmed.”

 

Okoye added that a  coordinated search-and-rescue operation, supported by intelligence-led tracking aimed at locating the suspects and rescuing the remaining victims was ongoing.

 

The scene of the incident has been visited by the Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso and other service commanders to provide operational directives.

 

The operation would continue until all the victims are safely rescued and the perpetrators apprehended, he assured.

 

The Police command, according to him is working with the NYSC Directorate to establish contact with the families of affected corps members and keep them informed of developments.

Finally, Okoye said: “The command appeals for calm and urges the public to remain vigilant. Anyone with credible information should report to the nearest police station or contact the command’s emergency lines.

 

“All information will be treated in utmost confidentiality.”
