Presidential hopeful, Peter Obi is not gunning for the position of vice president, according to Dr Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide.
The former Labour Party, LP, Presidential candidate, will, therefore, not accept to be presidential running mate in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, the Obidient spokesperson said, according to The Punch.
Speculations have been rife in the country that the former Anambra state governor has accepted to be the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, who, according to political analysts is poised to secure the ADC presidential ticket for the 2027 Presidential election.
Obi and Abubakar had recently joined the ADC after defecting from their respective political parties, the LP and PDP.
Obi had recently debunked the rumour that he has accepted to be Abubakar’s running mate again, having done same during the 2019 presidential election. According to him, he has come too far to play the second fiddle, saying he only has interest in becoming the President and Commander-in-chief.
Reinforcing Obi’s position, Dr Yunusa said the option in not on the table for the former Anambra governor.
“We have never put that on the table. Obi is running for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No more, no less. There is no discussion or anything related to him becoming a VP, and we have already released a statement to that effect,” Tanko said.
Recall that Obi shattered expectations during the 2023 presidential election, securing over six million votes, in the election won by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC. The former governor, though came a distant third, insists he won the election, even though the court had ruled otherwise.
