Peter Obi, a presidential hopeful in the People’s Democratic Party, PDP has received a boost for his presidential quest, after the Seun Onigbide, the co-founder and chief executive officer, CEO of BudgIT, said the civil organisation will raise N10 billion through crowd funding to assist the former Anambra state governor prosecute his campaign.
On Tuesday, the former governor dislosed his plan to run for the nation’s highest office if his party zoned the presidency to the south.
“Yes, I will step into the field to contest for the opportunity to serve this great country as President if my party, the PDP, zones the ticket to the south. But if it is thrown open, Nigerians will also hear from me,” he said on TwItteringham three days ago
His resolve comes after suggest in political quarters that Atiku Abubakar who he ran a joint presidential ticket with in 2019 has decider to pick Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state as his running mate in next year’s presidential election. Wike has denied he’s running with the former vice president.
BudgIT said the organisation will rally funds for the politician, adding that all effort is being channelled toward stopping moneybags from hijacking the electoral process ahead next year’s general election.
“A ₦10bn GoFundMe for Peter Obi will be [a] great starter for those who want [to] crowdsource Nigeria’s next leader. This will change the dynamics with the space hijacked by moneybags,” Onigbinde said on Twitter.
The PDP has yet to zone any political office though there are pressure on the party to zone the presidency to the south, particularly the south east which is yet to produce the president since the county returned to democracy in 1999.
Already some politicians from the zone have already registered their interest in the race. Apart from Obi, others who are running for president under the PDP include, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state, Senator Orji Uzor Kanu, Anyim Pius Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGT amongst others.
